KLEIN HONDELSGEBOUW
Beyond Space & Raumplan _ Collaboration
Office building _ Competition, Amsterdam
Het Klein Handelsgebouw is rooted in a search for clarity, durability and spatial restraint. Conceived under the principle of “Radical Simplicity”, the proposal challenges the logic of the generic glass office building, rethinking what contemporary work environments can be within the constraints of climate responsibility and long-term adaptability.
Rather than relying on technological excess, the design proposes a low-tech and resource-conscious approach, where architectural intelligence replaces mechanical complexity. The building is conceived as a robust and adaptable framework, capable of evolving over time while maintaining a strong and recognizable identity.
Material reduction, constructive logic and spatial efficiency become central design tools. Through these principles, the project seeks to achieve maximum impact with minimal means, translating necessity into clarity rather than compromise.
The result is a building defined by permanence and flexibility at once: a contemporary workplace that is both pragmatic and expressive, grounded in common sense rather than excess regulation or ornament.
“Radical Simplicity” becomes not only a design strategy, but an architectural attitude—one that values restraint as a generator of quality, atmosphere and long-term relevance.
